Boughey is proud that so many of its team have worked at the company for multiple years. Such loyalty speaks volumes of the way Boughey works. It has the feeling of a family, with close ties for many who have worked their way through the ranks. Over the years, retaining staff and the knowledge they bring to the company has been key to the business’ success. Dave Vernon, warehouse manager at Boughey is a great example of this.
Dave has been with Boughey for over 30 years. In his present position as warehouse manager and team leader, he oversees two zones, with many different core responsibilities. He mainly concentrates his time on Zone 2 and Zone 4, and e-commerce. A key part of his role is overseeing operations and he tries to spend as much time as possible on the warehouse floor, supporting his team and providing the opportunity to share ideas.
All in a day’s work
E-commerce is an exciting addition to Boughey’s business offering in what is a rapidly growing sector, with many opportunities. It offers added value and sales direct to end customers. Boughey chose to implement SAP to manage this and Dave was part of the team which oversaw its implementation at Boughey.
Because of the nature and diversity of the role, there’s no such thing as a typical day for Dave. His day can include operational meetings, or walking the warehouse floor, dealing with day-to-day matters and organizing staff. He also checks that all BRC standards are up-to-date and ready, and addresses any issues with certification.
Dave manages a team of around 70 staff, including SAP pickers, supervisors and team leaders. This can be complex, as Boughey’s warehouses stock products from over 160 customers, with 120 customers in Dave’s zones alone – everything from make-up brushes to porridge.
The biggest challenges of the job Dave faces are dealing with people and managing their expectations.
It’s also finding solutions to problems – for Dave these have included things like suggesting layer cards, corner boards and shrouds to ensure loads stay on a pallet. Everyday challenges which still need a workable solution.
The best part of the job is the people Dave works with. Dave enjoys working with the team at Boughey and supporting them. New starters are embedded in the Boughey culture, so that they develop a shared work ethic – the Boughey way.
In his various roles at the company, Dave has seen many changes over the years. He’s found it pays to be adaptable, as the warehousing and logistics industry has changed a great deal in the last 30 years. He also has to be adaptable due to the nature of his work, with varying shift patterns. But Dave finds that changes “Keep it interesting, keep you alive.”
Outside work, Dave’s interests include keeping fit and spending time with his
family. He also enjoys reading and sport, and is a qualified baker who
regularly bakes his own bread.
