Inside the factory with Typhoo tea

Posted on 11th January, 2018 Inside the factory with Typhoo tea

You may have caught Boughey’s ‘five minutes of fame’ last year when we featured in  BBC2’s popular Inside the Factory series. In the ‘Tea Bags’ episode, celebrities Greg Wallace and Cherry Healey followed the journey tea makes, from the day it is picked in Kenya to its delivery as teabags to supermarkets in the UK. We’re sure many viewers would have been astonished at the intricacies of the process. From plucking the tea, through sorting, classifying and packing to shipping and delivering – there’s a lot more to the process than you might imagine.

Our trucks and trailers were featured in the TV programme playing their part in delivering a share of a 20 tonne batch of tea, which had been turned into nearly seven million tea bags by Typhoo. Launched in 1903, Typhoo is one of the UK’s favourite tea brands and with the UK consuming 130,000 tonnes of tea every year, clearly the nation’s thirst for tea shows no sign of diminishing!

Did you know?

  • In the UK 95% of tea consumed is in teabag format.
  • One hectare of tea is planted out with around 12,000 tea bushes, which can produce up to 3,000kgs of tea a year.
  • A tea bush takes about five days to produce enough tea for one Typhoo tea bag.
