Is my supplier’s BRC accreditation updated regularly?

Posted on 11th January, 2020 Is my supplier’s BRC accreditation updated regularly?

It is important as a company to know who you are doing business with. Before you start dealing with suppliers or distributors, you should do your research, to check if they will be compatible with your operations and ethos. A good way to do business is to take recommendations from others. But you can also check out if reliable customers and suppliers have the relevant accreditations and certificates. Look at their websites – are they who they say they are and can they deliver what they claim? Look out for mentions of official industry accreditations, which should be included on their website. But sometimes, even if they feature on their websites, have they been kept up to date?

Best practice in the industry

In the logistics sector, there are a variety of important accreditations, qualifications and certificates that range from ‘nice to have’, to ‘absolutely essential’. At Boughey, we play an active part in a number of trade bodies and make sure we have all the accreditations needed to reflect our commitment to raising standards in all aspects of our business. These include accreditations from the Organic Food Federation, the Road Haulage Association and the United Kingdom Warehousing Association. One of the most important accreditations we hold is the BRC Global Standards for Storage and Distribution, relating to Ambient Foods and Consumer Products.

Many logistics businesses operating in the storage and distribution of food products will find that clients will look for a third-party standard, such as BRC, across the entire supply chain. In achieving an audit for BRC Storage and Distribution, logistics businesses can demonstrate that they are taking the necessary steps to ensure that safety and quality of the products in their care are being maintained.

High standards in quality and safety

BRC accreditations can assure suppliers and distributors a level of standards provided by a supplier. The British Retail Consortium (BRC) Global Standards are used across the world, with a standard providing the seal of approval for industry competence and expertise. The process to get BRC accreditation is relatively straightforward. You’ll need to buy the standard from the BRC Global Standards Bookshop and apply for an audit. During an on-site audit of your company, the assessors will decide if you are successful and if you are to be awarded the accreditation. There is a range of qualified companies that can undertake this audit and expert professionals will carry out the assessment, ensuring it’s to the highest industry standards. The award of such an accreditation will protect your brand reputation and integrity, by implementing best practice systems for both quality and safety.

Once you have attained accreditation, it’s important to keep the BRC standard updated annually, as legislation and circumstances in the industry may change. The BRC standard is recognised by many leading retailers, manufacturers, ingredients companies, packaging companies and other food handlers involved in the manufacturing and handling process. It’s available to anyone who is involved in food handling and storage at all stages of its journey. Having such an accreditation is a clear demonstration of competency and excellence. It is recognised around the world, with over 100 countries globally acknowledging its importance.

A new standard in global compliance

Internationally, a BRC certification is a fundamental requirement of anyone supplying food products to retailers in the UK.  As a result of its global recognition for high industry standards, any company website displaying the BRC logo will have an advantage over its less-qualified, unaudited competitors. Boughey Distribution’s scope of BRC certification covers the storage and distribution by road of packaged ambient stable food and packaging, from warehouse to retailer.  It also covers contract re-packing of packaged ambient stable food. Boughey was audited by NSF Certification Limited in 2019 and achieved a B+ grade.
