Wardle-based Boughey Distribution's Steve Nelson is celebrating following his win at the annual awards presented by the United Kingdom Warehousing Association (UKWA) in London earlier this month (July). Steve has been named Warehouse Manager of the Year.
Steve joined Boughey three years ago, knowing that it was a large, well-established business with a good reputation in the industry. Since his arrival, he has worked hard to develop the warehouse team. His initiatives have led to a significant improvement in efficiency of operation and productivity within the warehouse, mainly due to the team's motivation under Steve. His management style is collaborative: I understand the importance of involving the team in decisions. If you get them on-side, they'll work willingly and well. I've taken time to understand the ëBoughey Way' and additionally I've set up colleague ëlistening groups', management meetings and implemented best practice.
This style has paid dividends and has led to evident improvements in specific areas, such as coaching and customer focus. To take one example, Steve's commitment to Health & Safety has led to him updating some of Boughey's processes in this area. This had an immediate impact and the accident rate has markedly decreased in the last 24 months.
The judges in the Warehouse Manager category were looking for excellence in both personal and professional qualities. The winning candidate would have to demonstrate a strong and hands-on man-management style, a keen awareness of Health & Safety issues and an ability to develop innovative and sustainable initiatives which will deliver continuous improvements in warehouse management.
Bernard Murphy, Warehouse Director of Boughey Distribution, who nominated Steve for the award, has been impressed with his approach: Steve's made a big difference to the working atmosphere and work ethic in the warehouse. He's been worth his weight in gold since he's brought his new ideas to the role. I know he's well-respected by his colleagues and I didn't hesitate to nominate him for the Warehouse Manager of the Year award. I'm even more pleased now that he's won ñ it's well-deserved.
